Without question, I believe Barack Obama can help improve the condition of food in America. By showing what the Obama family eats, the President will set an example of the food standards that the first family adheres to. The context of the article is that Mary Clare Jalonick wrote the article on January 24, 2009. The significance is that Obama had been President for 5 days, and it is apparent the Jalonick wants to be supportive and fair towards the young President. The audience of, “Top Chefs Push Obama To Improve Food Policy,” is people interested in the private life of President Obama, and who were curious as to what Mr. Obama ate. The purpose of the article is to provide insight to the American population as to the possible direction that Obama may take to improving food policy in America. The strategy of the article is one in which, Jalonick provides examples of various chefs commenting on what Obama may do to improve the food quality, as a backdrop to provide support to the new President.
After taking a second look at this article recently, I realize that the author, Mary Clare Jalonick does a good job of humanizing President, Barack Obama. Not that Obama isn't human but she takes the time to describe a meal with the President in which the waitress asks him if he wants a margarita and he replies, "You know that’s the way I roll". This makes Obama seem like he just a regular guy that is out to eat, and it makes him seem easily relatable to the audience. In a way, president Barack Obama can be a sort of role model to the rest of the people in this country. Perhaps, if the President were to start only eating "real food" or "farm-to-table" food, as the author did, then maybe the rest of the country will slowly follow. I think that the best way to lead is to lead by example, and well that is exactly what Obama needs to do in this day and age. There are so many different ethical food arguments that are presented to people today it is hard to figure out what to believe and what to follow. If Obama were to step up and make these issues more publicized and take steps to change what we are eating and feeding people, then maybe we can actual start to improve our economy.
